Would you give your phone number to Facebook
Would you give your phone number to Facebook?
Facebook is rolling out new privacy measures claiming to enhance user security. Over the next few weeks, users will see a small pop up at the top of their news feed asking them to “Stay in control of your account by following these simple security tips”. Clicking on this link leads to the security center where users are educated about scams, strong passwords and are requested to bind their mobile numbers with their account.
According to the Facebook help center, “This is a security measure to help ensure that Facebook remains a community of people using their real identities to connect and share. If you ever lose your password, you’ll also be able to use your mobile number to access your account.” But would you be willing to share more info with facebook than you already have?
Facebook has already several ways to verify your identity,be it asking you to identify friends in your photos or answering security questions. So do they really need your phone number? Isn’t an alternate e-mail id good enough? Or is this just a knee jerk reaction to the LinkedIn fiasco? (Although Facebook says it was planned long ago).
