Facebook to allow kids under 13 to sign up.
Facebook is said to be working out a safe approach to allow kids under 13 to sign up on their ever growing social networking site. This would allow kids to sign up legally instead of lying about their ages and signing up. There are reportedly an approximate of around 7 million kids under 13 on facebook. (Consumerreports.org)
The junior version of facebook might have safety catches built in, like connecting a childs parents account with theirs or setting their privacy settings to friends only so that stalkers might not see their posts. Parents could be given the right to monitor friend requests.
It is interesting to consider if this is an attempt by facebook to overshadow its dismal stock performance after its debut on the NY stock exchange. Facebook officials countered that question by saying that this was being planned more than a year back. Things are still in the nascent stage, so whether this will come to pass or not is yet to be seen.
What do you think of this move by Facebook? Do you think that facebook might implement enough security features to safeguard childrens interests? Or is this just another headache for parents looking out to keep their children safe from Internet pests. Let us know your views in the comments.
