Google Plus One Button for Your rich SEO

Does Google’s +1 button matter?

Google Plus One Button for Your rich SEO

The title seems ironic right? If it’s by Google, it will matter. It does, but not in the same way that we would expect. The plus one button was touted as being to Google plus what the like button is to facebook. Similar in principle, but it works a little differently. They don’t show up in your timeline, but are instead found in a separate tab on your profile.

Recently, Google unveiled Search plus Your World, which allowed you to plus one search results as well. This was aimed at getting results that would enable you to know what your social circle recommends. So does more plus one’s mean a higher page ranking? Not exactly.

If you plus one a page, this will show up in the search results of your friends or colleagues. They in turn are more likely to visit that page, based on your plus one. This would lead to a higher number of hits on that page, thus bumping up its page rank. So your plus one indirectly affects that page’s SEO. The plus one gave it more visibility.

Search plus Your World has been quite in the eye of the storm since it was unveiled. The reason being your search results would include content from Google Plus profiles. As long as you have done your privacy settings right, you have nothing to fear. Only those posts which are publicly available will appear in the search results.

In my opinion, if Google is using my personal data only to get more relevant results, i probably wouldn’t mind it. Also this is probably being done to pull in more users to Google Plus, which is slowly but surely gaining onto facebook.

So are you using the plus one button to mark content that you find interesting? Have you ever checked out any sites, just because someone you know plus one’d it? Do let us know your views, if you agree or disagree or your thoughts in the comments below.
