Impressions from the 10th Global Peter Drucker forum in Vienna

It was the 10th year anniversary of the Global Peter Drucker Forum, in Vienna, Austria this November 2018. 

Date and venue:

29 – 30 NOVEMBER 2018 – IMPERIAL PALACE VIENNA

Theme: management. the human dimension. 

 

This global event, hosted a gathering of world’s iconic business, industry leaders, management professionals & students, philosophers and business professionals from across the globe.

The event was hosted at the breathtakingly beautiful Hofburg, the Imperial Palace in Vienna, Austria. 

I am a Global Peter Drucker challenge winner of 2014 in the entrepreneurs category across 35 countries, and it was back in 2014, when I was invited to be a part of this amazing event in Vienna, Austria for the very first time. (You can read about it here: GPDF14).  

This time, in 2018, I was officially a part of the global Peter Drucker team handling social media for some of the live panels & events along with and as part of a wonderful group of elite team members.

My experience this year was, ‘fabulous’!

The event was abuzz, both online and onsite as leaders, iconic professionals from various fields of work, industries, countries graced the Drucker 2018 forum.  

The conversations, panels, presentations and keynotes etc were filled with ideas, inspirations and with points to ponder about the journey from the past, the present scenarios and of course, the way ahead to the future, for both, individuals / professionals and as an organization. 

The final remarks, made us wonder on the most crucial aspects, we as professionals today need to ensure for not only a profitable organization but also as responsible citizens of today for a peaceful, successful and happy tomorrow. The focus that has shifted today from merely profitability and numbers to bringing a smooth integration between technology / digital and humanity to add great value. 

As shared earlier, being a part of the Peter Drucker forum team, I was occupied most of the time with my work into handling tasks with respect to social media for #GPDF18 but as a keen management professional and student for life, the curiosity in me ensured I kept taking notes from the eminent panelists and speakers or go and personally meet and have a conversation with them whenever I could.  

Two core points: (listed as a summary here)

The forum taught me these two core points (in addition to this of course, there were lots of valuable lessons in management and leadership for life which I could listen to and learn from): 

  1. Welcome uncertainty: Be brave, welcome the unknown. Do not be a victim of fixed ideas and standardised or hierarchical flow of work just because one has to. Question, try out something with an intent to improve something that is not upto the mark or enhance something that is already better. Try new things to empower yourself and those around you. World is changing with a rapid pace, we need to ensure to find a way to embrace and integrate digital, technology, management and humanity together. 
  2. Curiosity: It inspired a sense of curiosity and it did so with an ability to always ensure to stay curious in terms of ‘what could be done even better?’, to ask the right questions, ‘will this help my organization, will it improve the quality of life of my team members, peers and will it add value to the society as a whole?’.

 

Few of my learnings from this years forum: (highlights):

– It is apparent that more agile management is now seen as a key enabler of fast growth and enduring profitability for organisations and in making successful decisions as managers and leaders today. 

– One of the important aspects that was surely a part of the learning was that, in today’s scenario, making money is the result and not the final and only goal.

– The organisations of today and or the recent past for that matter that have seen and or experienced success and or profits are firms that have clearly showcased their obsession with creating and adding consistently more and more value for their end users.

– There is a paradigm shift in leadership roles and management in the sense that, today, the core and primary focus is on employee engagement, passion and their dedication with accountability and not just merely on hierarchical rules and strict adherence to  standardised regulations and structures. Focus is to ensure the employees, managers and professionals of today are empowered to deliver the best to become leaders of tomorrow.

At the end of the forum, the Founder & President of the Global Peter Drucker forum, Dr. Richard Straub was honoured with the Premier Award and Legendary Award from Asia-Pacific Brands Foundation as he joined the hallmark of distinguished luminaries across the globe. It was a proud moment for all of us watching him accept this prestigious honour.

The Drucker forum is not just an event, its a global conglomerate of some of the brightest minds in the world, iconic business and industry leaders who have come together with a simple idea to share their thoughts, learning’s and experiences with the management professionals and leaders of tomorrow.

Few of the notes & quotes (paraphrasing) noted during the event:

  • Paul Polman (ex- CEO Unilever: this was a big news as it was very recently announced): His words, speech, thoughts and ideas transcended divisions and broke barriers across communities, cultures, leaders, organisations and countries as the Imperial palace was brimming with the thunderous applause for his deep rooted bold beliefs and suggestions on humanity which he expressed at the 10th Global Peter Drucker forum. 

Paraphrasing Paul Polman: “You’re not going to solve problems by attending conferences. You have to do something. If you don’t take action, you’re as guilty as those who created the problems in the first place. We need to walk the talk by adjusting our compensation systems. There are very few CEO’s that can talk about the importance of human capital. It is important that we consider both, the environmental and social factors. You don’t buy purpose, you create purpose. Its about servicing others!”.

  • Henry Mintzberg : “A healthy organization is a collection of human beings and not just human resources. Work on community, on the ground, create the movement & tilt the power. A healthy society like a stable stool. It can balance itself perfectly on it’s three legs. We need to recognise all three sectors, for balance and not just the public and private sector anymore. Make it a civil society”.

 

  • Rita Gunther McGrath:  “When you think about your personal goals, think about what success looks like for you and what are the ways to get there. Give yourself the time and space to make that happen”.

 

  • “Roger L. Martin: It’s absolutely fundamental to economics that we have stable enough platforms to invest & the world will become more prosperous. Numbers times commitment, times unity, times worthiness”.

 

  • Tammy Erickson: “Your company’s success is not your thoughts but of others to care, innovate & do their best work. A leader today is someone who creates an environment that other people choose to join & do their best”.

 

  • Dr.Johan S. Roos: “A call for humanity, for people to really get together. Social entrepreneurship is changing the world”.

 

  • Ricardo Vargas: “We as human beings, need to bring people together or there will be no change or movement. We need to invest in the future of humanity as a community”.

Think higher and feel deeper. How come ONLY 13% of employees are fully engaged. Our organizations are inhuman by design. Bureaucracies are dead zones. This is not okay”

It gives you the ability to love, learn & lose it! We need tech & humanity, to make things & make things up. We need a story that moves us & a space that holds us”

 

  • Adrian Wooldridge: “Being part of the leadership class requires self-denial, not self-dealing. You should think in the long term, like a ship’s captain who views the entire ocean. CEO’s should spend some time on a retreat and reflect, read Plato, think more of philosophy”.

 

  • Herminia Ibarra: “The lag between organization, technology & management, bridge that gap. Move to the next step. Try some new things & get out of the robotic way. Try getting a little foolish”.

 

  • Rosabeth Moss Kanter : “In order to solve the new problem of today, get out of the building, come out to the streets, where there is hustle. Leadership has shifted from hierearchy to hustle”.

  • Mikko Kosonen: “Serving citizens and communities in different service needs at any time. Use information from individuals, public & other entities for their benefit by taking into account privacy issues. All the stakeholders are needed to build a foundation”.

  • Dorie Clark: ’Busy is what happens when you are at a demand of somebody else’s schedule. 96% executives agreed that strategic thinking is most important for company’s success. 97% executives in another study admitted they don’t have time for Strategic Thinking. Why do we do not do what we know we should do? It’s because of incentives.”

 

  • Hal Gregersen: In the world of AI & Digital transformation, human ability to ask the right questions will win the final argument. When operating at the edge of uncertainty, right questions unlock opportunities”

 

  • John Hagel : “What should work be? In a world of scalable efficiency, we specify every task & standardise them. But machines can do this better, right? Let them & we can focus on human capabilities for unseen opportunities’

I have shared these quotes merely as few of the leanings I heard, learnt or experienced while at the 10th Global Peter Drucker Forum in Vienna, this year.

These quotes, here, obviously do no justice to actual event experience which discussed immensely power packed ideas, know-how, case studies, live examples, real management issues, etc discussed by these and many more eminent speakers who were present at the forum, for which, one really had to be there.
