Twitter gets Hacked

Twitter has revealed in a blog post that after The New York Times and Wall Street Journal, its site had been targeted by users as well. They detected unusual patterns access patterns which helped them discover a live hacking attempt to access Twitter data. Fortunately they were able to shut it down within moments.

Further investigation of this attack revealed that even though they had shut it down as fast they could, hackers might still have gotten access to limited user information like usernames, email addresses, session tokens and in Twitters words “encrypted or salted versions of passwords”  for approximately 250,000 users. To be on the safe side, Twitter has reset passwords for all the accounts and is notifying the affected users via email. These users will need to create a new password to access Twitter and their old passwords will not work.

Twitter has advised users to disable Java on their browsers as a precaution against these exploits and has referenced this Slate article which provides specific instructions on doing so. Twitter notes that these attacks were not the work of amateurs, and were not an isolated incident. They believe that the attacks were extremely sophisticated and other companies might have been at the receiving end of that attacks as well. Please note that the accounts may or may not have been compromised, but Twitter has reset the passwords as a preemptive measure.
