Google Plus Sign-In ready to take on Facebook Connect
Google Plus has received another new and very important feature over which Facebook has long held a monopoly. Users will now be able to sign into various sites and apps using their Google Plus account. This is quite different than a simple Google account sign in. Google assures that this is more secure, social and simple. They have focussed on four core areas as follows :
Simple and Secure Sign-In :
Now whenever you sign in using your Google Plus account, you will be presented with a set of permissions which the app or site requires. You can also opt to share this information with people in your circles. In case you have activated two step authentication, it will be applicable in this scenario as well. You can visit plus.google.com/apps to review which apps you have granted permissions to.
Desktop & Mobile Integration :
If you sign up on a new site on the desktop, chances are that you will install its Android counterpart on your mobile as well. Google Plus Sign-In will prompt you here, to install the Android app on your mobile. So you can access the same site on the move and resume your browsing experience.
Sharing, not spamming :
Whenever you grant any app or site permissions to post to your profile, you want to ensure that your friends feeds are not spammed with the successive high scores you racked up in that new game. You can make sure to share your scores with a specific circle of gamers only. Provided you have given friends in other circles permissions to view this data, they can check it out from your profiles tab too. Also Google plans to surface this data only when you are looking for it and when its relevant unlike inundating your feed with it.
Sharing with your Social Circles :
Whenever you share from an app that uses Google Plus Sign-In, people who have you in their circles will see a new interactive post in their feed. Clicking on this post, will launch the app and allow them to perform specific functions. For eg: If you shared a radio station from the TuneIn Radio app, users will be able to listen to songs on that station and add that station to their favorites. Similarly others will be able to purchase or review according to the app they are in.
The following sites currently support the “Sign-in with Google Plus” option with more sites to be included gradually :
Google Plus is slowly expanding and threatening to break the shackles that Facebook and Twitter have a hold on. It will not be long before users will be able to log in using their Google Plus account instead of using Facebook and Twitter for the same. And with the granular controls that users can exercise over their data that can be shared with others, this might get popular very soon. What do you think of Google’s new service? Will you be using your Google Plus account to sign in to more sites? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below.
